Between Stone And Sky

Between Stone and Sky, oil on canvas, 17 x 50
The islands of Maine in summer are special places. The rocky ledges thrust out of the water from the bedrock below. There are days when we can feel truly part of the wind, earth and sky. With this painting I wanted to show the rhythm, the vibration of the day, the life as it infuses the woman on this island.

If Only
Portrait of Edna St Vincent Millay, oil on canvas 2017
I painted this portrait for the Millay Poetry Festival in Rockland, Maine in 2017. This is my vision of what she might have looked like had she not died in her 50’s.

Official Hallowell City Seal
Design of the official Hallowell City Seal.
This was based on the original seal drawn over 100 years ago. The original seal had disappeared and through several subsequent re-drawings over the decades the original image had degraded to be, well, really hard to distinguish what was what.
Working with our City Historian, Sam Webber we deciphered what the various parts of the old original seal were and I was brought in to draw up a new refreshed version.

A paradox? A paradox?
A paradox?
A paradox,
A most ingenious paradox! We’ve quips and quibbles heard in flocks,
But none to beat this paradox!A paradox,
a paradox,
A most ingenious paradox.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,
This paradox.Pirates of Penzance
Gilbert and SullivanCreating art is not your everyday affair. You have to take it seriously or you produce garbage. But on the other hand if you treat your latest creation as a holy relic you will also produce crappola. So your work has to have all your attention and be the most important thing in front of you and at the same time you have to be willing jump in and change it all around or even tear it up, casually, if it is going wrong.
You have to (try to) be honest with every brushstroke. Some look great but are wrong for the painting. So in spite of the individual beauty of a brushstroke you have to remove it to be honest to the whole.

Kennebec Mural, full
This is a 14 x 40 foot mural I was commissioned through the Percent for Arts Program to paint for the new Capital Judicial Center in Maine’s state capital of Augusta. The mural is titled Kennebec and tells of the history and importance of the river to Maine.
For more than 4 centuries the river was the major highway, artery connecting Maine literally with the ports of the rest of the world.
In the mural the river and sky are continuous but the various time periods fold into each other.
I kept the palette for this mural intentionally subdued to be in keeping with the serious and quiet setting in the lobby of the courtrooms.
I wanted to show the ways people lived, worked and played along the river as they built this region.
